Why do I need to create product certificates or declarations?
Product compliance documents of various kinds are mandatory for many products sold in the EU and the US – and many other countries. For example, importers and US domestic manufacturers selling children’s products in the United States must issue a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC). This document is, in turn, based on the lab test report.
In the EU, a Declaration of Conformity is mandatory for products that require CE marking. Additional documents are also required, such as user instructions and technical files.
Product certificates and other compliance documents are often mandatory for certain product categories.
Which countries/markets do the product certificate templates apply to?
We currently have templates applicable in the European Union and the United States. That said, you can use the General Document Template to create and store documents required in other countries – such as the UK, Australia, and Canada.
At what stage should I create a document using the templates?
Generally speaking, products must be fully compliant and documented (e.g. “certified”) by the time you start selling the items. As such, you must ensure that you have issued all mandatory compliance documents before you start manufacturing and importing products.
What am I supposed to do with the documents I create?
The documents can be requested by the customs authorities, market surveillance authorities, resellers or Amazon. Individual customers may sometimes also request such documents.
What can happen if I don’t have the mandatory compliance documents?
Lacking the mandatory product certificates and other compliance documents can result in a recall, or that your products are removed from marketplaces such as Amazon.
Do you have templates for all required certificates/compliance documents?
No, we only provide the templates listed on this page. We do not include templates for all certificates/compliance document types in existence – including in the EU and US. Further, additional documentation requirements sometimes do apply to products covered by document templates provided.
Do you help us to fill out the product certificate templates?
You must fill out the templates yourself. That said, you can submit the generated document file to our support team for a review. Keep in mind that we can only compare the document to the template headlines. We cannot know if the information you’ve input is correct.
For example, we cannot know whether you have input the correct product model/SKU or other information.
How many product certificates can I create?
There is no limit on the number of product certificates or other documents that you can create using the templates.
Do you keep the certificate templates up to date?
We review official government sources each month. This includes, for example, the CPSC website and the EU Official Journal. Please see the Monthly Review Methodology for a complete list of sources.
We update the templates as long as changes (if any) are publicly announced, which is usually the case. Further, there can be a delay from the time of announcement until we implement the changes. Hence, you should not assume that the certificate templates are always up to date. There is also a risk that we may miss certain changes.
Do you plan to add additional product certificate templates?
Yes, we plan to add additional product certificate templates to the Compliance Gate Platform.
Do you have product certificate templates for the United Kingdom?
The product certificate templates are not applicable to products sold in the United Kingdom. That said, some of the EU certificate templates may be similar (or even identical) to UK requirements. Further, you can also use the general templates.
Do you have product certificate templates for Australia?
The product certificate templates are not applicable to products sold in Australia. That said, you can still use the general templates.
